Frequently Asked Questions

(Q) Do you have any puppies available?

(A)  The wait time for puppies here at Astercreek and Wyrmhund varies, depending on heat cycles and who we are breeding. We don't breed our females on a regular every six months basis or so as most of them don't come in every 6 months and even if they do we skip heats as needed for the female's health. We breed for quality and this means it takes us time to plan a breeding and be in a position to hold one back from the litter, though there are times we will breed a litter and keep nothing back, it depends on what we need to progress our program. You can find out if we have any available puppies here or on Gooddog.com

(Q) What sizes/coats do you breed?

(A)  We currently raise miniature longhair and smooth dachshunds. We do not have plans for wirehairs at this time.
We have future plans to also be breeding, on a very small scale, we plan to have Australian Shepherds available.

(Q) What colors and patterns do you raise?

(A)  We focus primarily on reds, red sables, creams, black and tans/creams, and dapples occasionally. We are just starting to get into brindle and chocolate cream/tan as well.

(Q) Are your dogs AKC?

(A) Yes, our dogs are AKC and we also show in the venues of UKC.

(Q) What activities do you do with your dogs?
(A) Currently, we show in the conformation ring. We currently have plans to start in barn hunt as soon as we can and some scent work too! We strive for very versatile dogs.

(Q) Are your puppies raised in your home? What kind of socializing do they get?
(A) Our puppies are raised in our home(s), as any should be! They start in our nursery pen and when they are starting to move around we graduate them to a bigger pen where they start to use a litter box/peepads. They get socialized to various sights, sounds, and objects from this point on. Before going home we start kennel training as well. Check out more info on our puppy raising page!

(Q) How much do your puppies cost?

(A) Between $1800 and $2400, depending on what type of home they are going to (pet or show/performance).

(Q) Why did you import dogs?
(A) We saw a lack of the original breed type in American dogs and wanted to merge the two to create some balance. We liked the elegant flow and gait of the European lines, with the heavy chest and length of body on the American dogs. The dream to import a dog has been one for many years. Taro was the beginning of this for Aster Creek, and it happened in such a whirlwind that it almost didn't feel real. Littl Fut Dandi and various others were the grounds on which Wrymhund was built upon.

(Q) How long have you been breeding?
(A) Shelby was raised into the breed, however, her parent's dogs weren't AKC or anything special. Around 15 She started to get very interested in the show and purebred world of dogs. She joined an online forum and started learning what she could. When she turned 18 she bought my first AKC chocolate and tan Dachshund named Hazel. She was the start of everything Shelby has now. She has been breeding for 13 years now. Melissa was raised around St. Bernards her entire childhood, with her grandparents having a love for Dachshunds that fueled her current love of them now. Previously she bred and showed Shiba Inu and Persian cats. She has been around dogs and the husbandry of them her entire life.

(Q) Where are you located?

(A) We are located in Minnesota.
